Advisory board

Phil Blankenship is a seasoned asphalt engineer with deep roots across the industry and a can-do energy that turns hard problems into next steps. As Uberbinder's US Technical Advisor, he brings more than 30 years at the leading edge of asphalt technology, and a laboratory built precisely for the journey Uberbinder is on — from bench to road.

Few people know the American asphalt ecosystem as well as Phil. A professional engineer since 1993 with bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky, he began on the agency side as Superpave coordinator and asphalt binder lab manager for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. He then spent a decade as a product development engineer and hot-mix expert at Koch Materials, followed by a product role at SemMaterials and a decade as Senior Research Engineer at the Asphalt Institute. That blend of agency, industry, and research gives him a panoramic view of how a new material reaches the road.

In 2017, he founded Blankenship Asphalt Tech & Training (BATT), a consulting practice and testing laboratory focused on exactly what Uberbinder is targeting: lab-to-pavement innovation and product commercialization. From mix design and performance testing to product trials, specification writing, and on-site support, Phil has guided countless materials from concept to market, adding product-launch and trial leadership with BASF and Surface-Tech to a formidable record.

His standing shows in his roles on the Transportation Research Board's binder committee, the executive board of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, and as chair of the ASTM subcommittee on fundamental mechanistic testing. For Uberbinder, Phil is a multidisciplinary mentor — rigorous in the lab, credible in the field, and relentlessly engaged — pairing deep technical authority with belief that the right innovation, properly tested, can change the road.
