Advisory board

Dr. Tom Hasell is a Reader in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool and Scientific Adviser to Uberbinder. He is among the world's foremost authorities on inverse vulcanisation — the process that transforms elemental sulfur into stable, high-performance polymers — and his research has been instrumental in advancing Uberbinder's technology to where it stands today.

Tom’s path runs through some of the most respected names in materials science. He completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham under Steve Howdle, with research placements in the United States (Eric Beckman, University of Pittsburgh) and Japan (Satoshi Yoda, NIAST), before joining Professor Andy Cooper’s group at Liverpool in 2008 to work on porous materials and porous organic cages.

In 2015, backed by a prestigious Royal Society Fellowship, he founded his own research group dedicated to making polymers from elemental sulfur — pioneering a field now pursued in laboratories around the world. His expertise spans synthesis, supercritical processing, polymers, nanocomposites, dynamic covalent chemistry, and porous materials, giving him a rare command of both the fundamental science and its practical possibilities.

For Uberbinder, Tom is the bridge between frontier discovery and real-world impact — the authority who ensures that turning waste sulfur into the world’s roads rests on the deepest possible scientific foundation.
